Ginevra Elkann’s stunning debut with autobiographical touches, is a happy film about an unhappy family.
It’s the 1980’s, and Alma’s parents have been divorced for 5 years. Alma prays secretly for the reunion of her divorced parents over one indelible winter in this intimately observed, instantly appealing family drama. She and her brothers live a sheltered childhool in Paris with their bourgeois Russian Orthodox mother, until one day they are suddenly packed off and sent to stay with their unconventional and broke Italian father, Carlo (Scarmacio) and his new wife Benedetta (Rohrwacher) on their honeymoon in Rome. What unfolds to everyone’s surprise is a freewheeling season of beach outings, day trips to Rome and joyrides with a gang of cooler, older kids. When an unfortunate accident forces the exes to come together, the children’s hopes of their parents reuniting are ignited.
Sentimental and heartwarming, this coming-of-age story takes the audience on a journey into the mind of the young Alma and delves into the confusion children often face when attempting to make sense of the adult world.
