Starring Joely Richardson, David Farrier, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Spike Lee, Princess Diana, Bono , Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan
A riveting film that lifts the curtain on the icon who brought opera to the people.
Pavarotti tells vibrant tales — Pavarotti used to bring suitcases of tortellini on tour with him — and is good on the technicalities of his talent, explaining his mastery of breathing, his virtuoso ability to hit a run of high Cs and his talent for making the tenor range sound warm and organic. Because the film was made with the complete cooperation of the family, the material includes new interviews with family and friends mixed together with old footage of Pavarotti chatting about his life and career through various talk-show and news appearances.
Also included are some of Pavarotti’s most noted performances, including moments of his portrayal of Rodolfo in “La Bohème.” These glimpses alone are worth the price of admission.
Ron Howard’s ebullient documentary salutes the operatic legend Luciano Pavarotti for the genius he was.
